Delta’s 2027 Flagstaff Flights: Grand Canyon Hotel Choices and Travel Advice
A new flight to Flagstaff could change how travelers plan the Grand Canyon and Sedona in 2027. Delta has announced twice-daily, year-round nonstop flights from Salt Lake City (SLC) to Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG), scheduled to begin June 7, 2027 . The real decision for visitors is not just which flight to take: it is where to spend the night, especially while Grand Canyon South Rim lodging has been affected by infrastructure damage.
OptionTrip travel briefing · October 26, 2026. Flight service is scheduled, not guaranteed; hotels, roads and park operating conditions can change before travel.
What is changing for flights to Flagstaff?
According to Delta’s October 1 announcement , the carrier plans two daily flights in each direction between Salt Lake City and Flagstaff, operated by its connection partner SkyWest on the CRJ-550 aircraft. Flagstaff is a gateway to northern Arizona, with the red-rock country around Sedona and the Grand Canyon South Rim within regional driving reach.
Do not assume a fare or a flight time based on a future schedule announcement. Compare the actual dates and checked baggage rules, and confirm that the flight you want is on sale before reserving a nonrefundable hotel or car.
Choose your base: Flagstaff, Sedona, Tusayan or Williams
Delta describes Sedona as roughly a 50-minute drive from Flagstaff and the South Rim as roughly 90 minutes away. Those are indicative travel estimates, not guaranteed road times. The National Park Service lodging page places Flagstaff about 80 road miles from Grand Canyon Village, while Tusayan is about seven miles south of the village.
Important: verify Grand Canyon lodging closures before booking
The South Rim is generally open year-round, but the park’s overnight lodging situation needs separate verification . An NPS lodging advisory states that concession-run overnight accommodations inside the park were halted effective August 31, 2026 after flood-related damage to the Transcanyon Waterline. It identifies hotels in Tusayan, outside the park , as unaffected by that particular lodging closure. Do not interpret the park being open as proof that an in-park lodge is bookable.
For a 2027 trip, check the NPS page again before paying any deposit. Reopening, road and water-supply conditions may change. The NPS also notes that free South Rim shuttle services operate with seasonal route variations and that park entrance passes are required.
Three practical trip patterns
1. Fly in and explore Flagstaff + Sedona
Stay in Flagstaff if you want to use the new airport connection and enjoy town services on arrival. Reserve a separate Sedona day for hiking or sightseeing. A rental car can be useful but compare the total cost with a guided excursion, parking and transfer options. Avoid planning difficult hikes on arrival day if you expect a long connecting journey.
2. Make Grand Canyon the priority
Choose a hotel in Tusayan or another verified gateway town when South Rim access is your main objective. Confirm that the individual property accepts your dates and that your intended park services are open. If you stay in Flagstaff, leave enough time for road conditions and the return drive. The South Rim is open year-round, but some concessions and specific facilities can be restricted.
3. Explore the Southwest over several nights
For an Arizona road trip, split the trip into a Flagstaff overnight and a separate base closer to your most important sights. Compare the combined lodging, fuel and rental-car costs rather than looking only at a headline nightly room price. You can build and adjust a multi-stop plan with OptionTrip’s Vi travel assistant.
