Mount Rainier Winter Access 2026: Paradise Gate Hours, Road Closures and Chains
Mount Rainier National Park has switched to its winter gate routine. The National Park Service (NPS) road-status page, updated October 29, 2026, lists Sunrise Road, Stevens Canyon Road, Paradise Valley Road and White River Road as closed for the season. The Nisqually Entrance to Longmire remains listed open; the Longmire-to-Paradise road is listed open but now has nightly gate closures and daily weather-dependent reopening. A previous “open” label is not a promise of access tomorrow.

Mount Rainier access: what the October 29 NPS report says
The official NPS road-status page is the starting point for every itinerary. Navigation apps may suggest closed entrances and leave travelers facing a lengthy detour.
Paradise gate hours: two NPS pages show different times
There is an important discrepancy between official pages as checked on October 29. The newer NPS road-status report (October 29) gives a typical gate opening of 9 a.m., uphill closure at 3 p.m. and downhill closure at 4 p.m.; it advises leaving Paradise by 3:30 p.m. A separate NPS winter-travel page (updated October 28) shows 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
Do not rely on the later times. Until the park reconciles the pages, plan around the earlier road-status cutoff, verify the latest daily gate alert, and allow additional time for weather and traffic. The NPS says to check the prior afternoon after 4 p.m. and again after 7 a.m. on the travel day. The gate can open late, close early or remain closed for the day.
November 1 through May 1: every vehicle must carry chains
From November 1 to May 1, all vehicles must carry tire chains or an approved alternative traction device , including all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles, even on clear days. Carrying chains is not the same as always installing them; posted traction requirements determine when installation is necessary. Rental cars are not exempt. Before reserving a rental, confirm the company’s chain policy, the vehicle’s tire size and a legally acceptable traction option.
Read the NPS tire-chain FAQ and winter-driving guidance . Check the weather, carry warm layers, food and water, and do not assume a four-wheel-drive booking guarantees safe access.
Construction closures that affect trail plans
The NPS construction notice, updated October 19 , says Summerland Trailhead is closed during Fryingpan Creek Bridge preparations; there is no parking or trail access there, and pedestrians may not pass through the signed White River Road closure. Bridge work is planned across the 2027–2029 seasons.
The Ohanapecosh Developed Area is also closed during its campground rehabilitation project, scheduled through February 2027. The closure covers the campground, visitor center, restrooms, parking and pedestrian access. The Grove of the Patriarchs remains closed for recreation while bridge replacement is planned. These are separate construction restrictions, not simply temporary snow gates.
Which trip makes sense?
One-day visit from Seattle or Tacoma
Choose a flexible day with a good weather forecast, check Nisqually and Longmire access before leaving, and treat Paradise as a conditional bonus. If the upper gate stays shut, look for an officially permitted lower-elevation alternative instead of trying to drive around a closure. Avoid nonrefundable commitments tied to reaching Paradise.
Winter stay near the southwest entrance
Ashford or the Nisqually approach can reduce the amount of driving before an early gate check, but a nearby hotel does not guarantee access to Paradise. Compare cancellation terms, parking, chain availability and the final drive. A longer stay may offer more flexibility than a single tightly scheduled day trip.
Sunrise, Summerland or an east-side driving loop
These are poor late-October and winter driving targets because the relevant park roads and/or trailheads are closed. Reschedule for a season when NPS confirms reopening. Do not substitute an unverified backroad, hike into a construction closure or follow a GPS shortcut.
