Zion Narrows Closed After River Rise: What November Visitors Need to Know
Zion National Park has temporarily closed The Narrows and all slot canyons leading into it. The National Park Service posted the closure on November 3, 2026, and the alert remained active in the park’s current-conditions listing on November 5.
This is not a park-wide closure. Zion National Park remains open, but visitors planning a river hike should choose another route and check conditions again before traveling to the trailhead. The Park Service has not published a fixed reopening date.
Why The Narrows closes
The Narrows route follows the North Fork of the Virgin River through a narrow canyon. The Park Service says the bottom-up route closes when flow exceeds 150 cubic feet per second or when the National Weather Service issues a flash-flood warning. Water levels can change quickly after rain upstream, and the river may remain hazardous even when skies near Springdale appear clear.
For the top-down through-hike from Chamberlain’s Ranch, permits are also suspended during closures. Visitors should not enter closed canyons or rely on a forecasted drop in river flow as permission to proceed; only the park’s active alert determines whether the route is open.
What travelers should do now
Check Zion’s official current conditions and alerts page on the morning of the hike.
Review the Park Service guide to The Narrows , including flow thresholds and flash-flood risks.
Use the linked U.S. Geological Survey gauge only as additional planning information. A gauge reading does not override an NPS closure.
Keep a backup hike that does not enter a slot canyon. Trail and road availability can change with weather and maintenance work.
Do not drink from or submerge your head in river water. Zion continues to warn visitors about toxic cyanobacteria in rivers, streams and pools.
Other Zion access information
The park is open 24 hours a day. In early November, visitor-center, campground and shuttle schedules are seasonal, so travelers should verify operating hours separately. The Park Service also lists the Watchman Trail as closed pending repairs and restricts oversized vehicles on the Zion–Mount Carmel Highway.
Visitors who only want to see the entrance to The Narrows can ask rangers whether the paved Riverside Walk is open, but they should not continue into the river while the closure is in force. The safest plan is to treat the closure as open-ended until the Park Service removes the alert.
