Grand Teton Begins Winter Road Closures: What Visitors Can Still Do
Grand Teton National Park began its winter road season on November 1, 2026, closing key interior routes to motor vehicles while keeping some of them available for non-motorized recreation as conditions allow.
The National Park Service says Teton Park Road is closed to vehicles between Taggart Lake Trailhead and Signal Mountain Lodge through April 30. The seasonal closure gives wildlife a quieter corridor and turns the road into a winter recreation route.
What is closed to vehicles
The vehicle closure covers the central portion of Teton Park Road. Moose-Wilson Road is also unplowed between Death Canyon Road and Granite Canyon Trailhead and is closed to vehicles for the winter season. Other secondary roads—including Antelope Flats, Deadmans Bar, Pilgrim Creek, Schwabacher and Two Ocean—close seasonally depending on conditions.
These closures do not mean the entire park is closed. Grand Teton remains open year-round, and U.S. Highway 26/89/191 continues to provide the main north-south route through the park. Drivers should still expect rapidly changing weather, wildlife near roads and possible construction delays.
Walking and cycling before snow
When the closed portions of Teton Park Road and Moose-Wilson Road are free of snow, pedestrians and cyclists may use them. On Teton Park Road, visitors may also walk, run or use rollerblades, and leashed pets are permitted under the park’s seasonal rules.
Once snow covers Teton Park Road, bicycles, fat-tire bikes and rollerblades are no longer allowed. Skiing, snowshoeing and walking become the appropriate uses. The park generally grooms Teton Park Road for skiing, snowshoeing and hiking from mid-December to mid-March, but the exact start depends on adequate snow.
How winter visitors should prepare
Check the park’s current-conditions and road-status pages immediately before travel; short-term restrictions can change faster than trip plans.
Carry a winter emergency kit and consult Wyoming 511 for conditions on highways outside and through the park.
Do not assume a closed road is ready for skiing. Early-season pavement may be bare, icy or only partly snow-covered.
Watch for wildlife and slow down. Seasonal closures protect animal movement, but animals still cross open highways.
Confirm facility availability. Many visitor centers, marinas, campgrounds and concession operations are closed for winter even though the park itself remains open.
Construction also affects access in the south end of the park. The National Park Service lists Death Canyon Road and Trailhead as closed to all use, and notes delays near Moran Junction and the Moose Entrance area. Visitors planning a specific trail should verify the trailhead rather than relying on a summer map.
